About

Chris Kaspar de Ploeg (1994) is an investigative journalist, grassroots organizer, speaker, moderator, multi-instrumentalist, spoken word artist and author of Ukraine in the Crossfire. Starting at a young age, Chris already boasts a decade of experience writing, speaking and organising for social justice.

His dozens of articles have appeared in various quality publications across the globe, such as De Groene Amsterdammer (NL), Follow the Money (NL), OneWorld (NL), De Wereld Morgen (BE), the Monthly Review (USA), Covert Action Magazine (USA) and Dissident Voice (USA). Chris has organised over a hundred events with a wide range of communities and social justice organisations, such as Friends of the Congo, Students for Justice in Palestine, Free West Papua Campaign, HIJOS and many more. He is one of the co-founders and lead organizers for Arts of Resistance, a grassroots coalition bridging social movements and the arts, and for Aralez, a pan-decolonial foundation based in Amsterdam.

Chris is an experienced speaker and moderator, having spoken at dozens of events, where he brings the knowledge of his extensive writing and organising to bear on various social justice themes, such as (neo-)colonialism, climate justice, racism and capitalism. As an organizer, writer and speaker, Chris always aims to bring silenced perspectives to light and build bridges between the oppressed, to help build a decolonial movement for eco-socialism in the 21st century.

Chris was a lead organizer in the historic student movement of 2015 that occupied the humanities faculty and the managerial headquarters of the University of Amsterdam for nearly two months, under the banners of De Nieuwe Universiteit and the University of Colour. After he graduated cum laude from Amsterdam University College, with a major in sociology and political science, Chris went on to work as a cultural-societal programmer at Studio/K for nearly three years, where he has organised with dozens of grassroots groups to bring social justice events to the neighbourhood of East Amsterdam.

Continuing as an independent organizer since then, his events have appeared in the Melkweg, Tolhuistuin, Pakhuis de Zwijger, Ru Paré and the University of Amsterdam, among other places. Since 2023, he is also program maker for Decolonial Dialogues at the University of Amsterdam, co-ordinator of the Lectorate for Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, and financial director at community center De Bol. Currently, he is finishing an Online Degrowth Master at the Institute for Environmental Studies and Technology in Barcelona.

On the creative side, Chris has performed as a spoken word artist, percussionist, harmonica, handpan and/or flute player on more than a dozen events, including in the Melkweg, Pakhuis de Zwijger and Studio/K. He has been a member of the Market Theater for two years, both as a researcher and (musical) performer, to bring social justice theater for free to various local markets in Amsterdam.

Finally, Chris is an experienced meditator in the Zen tradition and has spend several months in retreat in various monasteries. With the Aralez community gatherings, he and his team aim to bring healing to social justice organizers in Amsterdam.
